They may just be right in some cases. The problem is in making a
connection, understanding why a particular well-grounded area in
inference algorithms or whatever is expected to move beyond narrow AI
if you push it hard enough in the right direction. And understanding
such connection may be done within academia, if you have a strong
enough hunch for where to look.
