A notion I have is that any sufficiently powerful Mind would effectively
spawn off simulations just by considering various scenarios. It would be as
natural for a powerful enough intelligence as breathing. There doesn't need
to be a "purpose" per se beyond considering some aspect of the scenario in
reasonably full context. If so and if such super intelligence are very
likely then simulations pop into and out of existence quite often. The more
powerful the mind and the deeper the needed context the richer and more
detailed will be the simulation.
