During WW2 to use the same example, both sides frantically strived to
progress in areas that could lead to victory ie. the nuclear bomb. The
discoveries made at this time have been applied to countless areas of
research since - its the basic progression of ideas through conjecture
and refutation - put the process under pressure like in any global
catastrophe situation and it speeds up. This is perhaps why that guys
machine that invents, works so well.
