We used to believe it was infinite because we couldn't see the boundaries. Now we know that the observable universe has a finite age, size, and mass according to the Big Bang theory, and finite resolution due to quantum mechanics. We now know there is an upper bound on the information content of the observable universe, namely the Bekenstein bound of the Hubble radius, 2.91 x 10^122 bits. No agent can know the exact state of any universe of which it is a part because that universe including the agent must have more possible states than the agent could represent. So the agent must always have some uncertainty about its environment. It can never know everything.
