Hi Eli,
I just spent most of today (Sun 07-05-06 [logical date notation]) reading &
studying your piece on Bayes Theorem here -
_http://yudkowsky.net/bayes/bayes.html_
(http://yudkowsky.net/bayes/bayes.html)
I would just like to say : "Thank you very much indeed."
I got the first 3 (mammography) questions wrong. All of them.
and I used pen & paper and a calculator. Bollox !! (Hey folks - at least
I'm not a doctor.)
then, with Eli's "excrutiating" [his words] tuition, I got the next one
right. (Pearls in painted plastic eggs, etc.)
By the time I got to the 3rd example - Hoses,sparks & gizmos - i could see
it in my head.
I got the answer without much effort at all.
Those "visualisations" are superb. Wish I'd had stuff like that when I was
in school.
Yesterday, I knew next to nothing about Bayes theorem.
Today, I know what it is and how it works.
That Internet essay is a bloody Masterpiece.
Thanks Eli.
P.S. Pls remember that some of us have to try hard to keep up.
B rgds,
Paul C.
