Check out this story on rapid CVD growth of single
crystal diamond:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/05/050527105139.htm
The ultimate structural material would be carbon
nanotube reinforced diamond. Carbon nanotubes are
strong in tension, but floppy. Diamond is strong
in compression, but brittle. Combining them into
a composite structural material like concrete, where
steel reinforcing provides the tensile strength
and stone the compressive strength, would provide
a versatile product. It would be roughly 1000x
stronger than concrete. If it can be produced for
less than 1000x the cost, it would have wide use.
Finished concrete costs about $0.06 a pound, so
nanotube/diamond structures would need to be less
than $60/lb to compete at current costs.
