Not necessarily. Freeman Dyson has no doctorate. Neither, IIRC, does Ed
Fredkin.
On the other hand, it really helps to have graduated from high school.
People are such sticklers these days.
(I know this from experience; I was shunted off to a trade school at 12
because of my evident stupidity and refusal to concentrate on parsing
Latin. Took me years, nay decades, of sideways finagling to get through to
a PhD, although the last stretch was all done on a healthy scholarship that
enabled me to buy my first house; my dissertation resulted in three solemn
scholarly books. Don't try this at home, kids.)
