My guess is that we can detach the actual sensation from a sentient's final
behavioral response. Though of course in animals this is the way it works,
positive qualia result in seeking etc.
There is probably a relationship of this kind:

the kind of processes that influence the overall working of the brain and
switch it into an "avoidance" mode (or parts of these processes) create
negative qualia

But that's just a guess.
