As you yourself said, volitionally modifying one's own
source code (which in living organisms is RNA or DNA)
is too dangerous. Whenever it may have cropped up in
the past it would almost always kill the organism,
thus exerting negative selective pressure. Only
modifications to the germ line which do not kill the
organism before it can reproduce will be passed on in
the source code.
