Jef,
I agree that humanity, in its current condition, does not come anywhere
near to actualizing its true potential.
However, it doesn't follow from this that the global maturing of
humanity must or will occur prior to machine sentience, recursive AI
self-modification, etc.
So far as I can tell, the processes leading to superintelligent AI are
moving much faster than the processes leading to the global maturation
of humanity, leading me to suspect that in fact the former will come
first.
