>the less pain (more joy) we will experience
I've noticed several times where someone has referred to negative and
positive experience as if these were at opposite ends of a single
spectrum, in that a person's experience lies somewhere along the line
from max-negative to max-positive. I'd like to point out that often a
person's experiences at a single point in time can lie at multiple
points along perhaps multiple lines. Anyone who's ever laughed during a
funeral knows what I mean. You can feel terrible sadness at the same
time that you're feeling other emotions, they're not mutually exclusive.
I imagine that a transhuman AI, if able to experience emotions at all,
will be able to experience many emotions fully and simultaneously, and
will perhaps need to invent new measurements just to answer the question
"How are you feeling today?"
