It's a race, and the prize is the world. There are several paths and
many competitors. Drop out and you just guarantee that someone
else will win. That's the realpolitik of the situation.
There is also the argument that superintelligence in some form is
the only thing which can stop the parallel race towards superweapons
(especially "grey goo") from ending in total destruction.
If the competitors agreed that a "Friendly" intelligence was the only
rational goal, that would blunt the struggle somewhat. It would
become a competition of methods rather than a power struggle.
