A suspicion I sometimes play with is that we are indeed in a
sim. But the purpose of the sim is to generate and evolve new
unique intelligences. When such intelligences reach Singularity
level they "graduate" into the post-Singularity existence that
gave rise to the sim. A variant is that this sim is what was
left by the last Singularity for the further development and
ripening of those not ready to fully participate.
