My guess is that [b] will have a huge emotional/philosophical impact on
humans, whereas [a] will not.
Very numerous and diverse, highly specialized AI's are just going to seem to
humans like useful tools or interesting scientific entities.
When a software program gives the qualitative impression of being a mind, of
having experiences and some sort of feelings...
that's the big deal!
