I think a better analogy is humans trying to stop an asteroid impact.
Humans have said, "right, no asteroids are allowed to hit Earth" and
then they developed methods of diverting asteroids and destroying them
in space so that they don't cause problems (because asteroids, the wily
bunch they are, rarely know and less often respect the laws of the
planets they hit). Alas for the humans, their glorious law is broken
one day, only no one knows it because they're all dead. An asteroid
silently and swiftly snuck up out of a spot in space they hadn't looked
at for a while. Whoops!
